Should I attach conditions to a child's inheritance?

Every week a Guardian Money reader submits a question, and it's up to you to help him or her out – a selection of the best answers will appear in next Saturday's paper.
This week's question I am set to receive a windfall of £20,000 and am splitting it between my two children, who are both in their 20s. Friends suggest I attach strings – eg to use the money to pay off student loans – but I think they should be free to blow it on holidays or luxuries if they wish. Am I right?
What are your thoughts?
